Assessments
When an individual is experiencing a learning difficulty, a psychological evaluation of skills and abilities can provide useful information and a foundation for the correct diagnosis and subsequent treatment recommendations, as well as academic support and accommodations. A learning disability is more than just differences or difficulties in the learning process, it is a psychological disorder that impacts how the brain receives, processes, stores, retrieves, and responds to information.
With accurate diagnosis, supportive information and helpful recommendations, treatment can be provided to help an individual reach optimal potential.
At Smith Psychological, we believe that clear understanding leads to the best care.

ADD/ADHD Assessment
Individuals with ADD/ADHD often experience challenges in everyday life that get in the way of moving forward with their personal goals. Children with ADHD tend to feel overwhelmed by the moving elements in their lives, and often they cannot clearly understand the problem aside from assuming that everything is the problem.
When faced with this global feeling of distress, how can one possibly affect change and take necessary steps toward reclaiming a sense of purpose? When you don’t know what the problem is, how can you possibly address it?
The informative and enriching experience of a comprehensive evaluation is one way in which an individual with ADD/ADHD can gain clarity as to how these challenges impact everyday life. Our assessment services help to identify the psychological elements related to ADD/ADHD to provide clarification and treatment recommendations that support optimal functioning.
At Smith Psychological, we believe that clear understanding leads to the best care.

Apart from medication, there are additional ways to help with ADHD. In fact, most people see benefits from specific recommendations and accommodations quickly.

Behavioral/Emotional
Assessments
Children or teens who have emotional and behavioral disturbances often exhibit significant behavioral excesses or deficits.
Emotional or behavioral disorders can be divided into three groups that are characterized by: externalizing behaviors (such as hyperactivity, aggression, delinquency), internalizing behaviors (typically expressed by being socially withdrawn), and low-incidence disorders (infrequent but severe disorders, such as childhood-onset schizophrenia or bipolar disorder). A diagnosis of a mental health disorder is based on criteria defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (TR).
When you receive an assessment from Smith Psychological you receive a set of clear and realistic recommendations for how to support your child in developing necessary skills to lead a successful life.
At Smith Psychological, we believe that clear understanding leads to the best care.

Childhood Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment
Does your child struggle with social communication and social interaction and/or restricted, repetitive patterns that inhibit success at home, school, or in social situations? Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are varying and often present differently across individuals. Examples of such symptoms may include lacking social-emotional reciprocity skills, such as typical back-and-forth communication, initiating and responding in conversation, or sharing interests or emotions with others. Children within this spectrum may demonstrate repetitive motor movements or speech, insistence on sameness of routine or difficulty with flexibility, and heightened distress at small changes or transitions. They may also have rigid thought patterns, can be highly fixated on interests with unusual intensity or focus, and may be over or under stimulated by sensory input in the environment such as temperature, pain, or visual, auditory, scent or tactile preoccupation or sensitivity.
Through our highly specialized assessment process, we can identify your child’s areas of deficit and ability, obtain the proper diagnosis, and recommend the most effective intervention plan. The comprehensive evaluation involves multiple specialized tools including the MIGDAS-2, the Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum 2nd edition, which is a well-regarded tool to observe the diagnostic behaviors of autism spectrum disorder. The evaluation is designed for children ages 6 years and up, and for individuals of all language functioning ability, including non-verbal individuals. Each parent will receive a comprehensive report during a feedback session, in which treatment recommendations are provided to create a clear path toward growth, development, and support.
At Smith Psychological, we believe that clear understanding leads to the best care.
